  • Tennis shoes! This excursion takes you through some steep and slippery terrains. Leave your flip flops at your hotel!
  • Consider bringing another article of warm clothing since temperatures at the Wonderful Bridges tend to be around 10 degrees colder than in the city.

Tour Overview:

As Plovdiv Trips’ best-selling tour, this excursion is the perfect combination of some of the most famous and historical and natural landmarks in Bulgaria.

Departing from Plovdiv, this tour will lead you into the magical and mysterious Rhodope Mountains. You will pass through the beautiful town of Asenovgrad while in route to Asen’s Fortress, an ancient 13th century church that offers spectacular views on the Rhodope Mountains landscape, the town of Asenovgrad, and the Thracian Valley.

On clear days, you will even get an impressive view of the Balkan Mountain range far away on the horizon.

From Asen’s Fortress, the next stop is deeper into the Rhodope Mountains to the second largest monastery in Bulgaria and one of the most sacred places in Bulgarian history—Bachkovo Monastery.

Last, but definitely not least, are the Wonderful Bridges (or Chudnite Mostove, as the locals call them). The unique natural phenomenon consists of two marble bridges that were formed by centuries of erosion by what was once a huge river.

Tsepina Fortress, one of the most visited historical sites in Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains, is only 10 km from the village of Dorkovo. After a short 10-minute hike up a dirt road to the walls of the fortress, you will discover the archeological remains of a Thracian settlement, the foundations of many ancient Christian churches, and a museum with authentic artifacts from the fortress.

From Tsepina, the next stop on the tour is at the Park Pliocene—a paleontological museum with a collection of 600 bones from more than 30 ancient animal species, including dinosaurs!
